CLINIC IN A BOX NURSES VISIT COLLEGE

Nurses from The Clinic in a Box (CIAB) Project have visited students at Burton College to raise their awareness and knowledge of a variety of health and lifestyle issues.

Funded by South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust and the Heart of Burton Partnership, the CIAB Project aims to improve knowledge, attitudes and behaviour about a range of health issues including relationships, contraception, smoking and healthy eating.

PAVILION FOR CHILDREN’S HOSPICE OPENED

A pavilion built for the Treetops children’s hospice in Trentham, by Timber Trades students from Burton College, has been officially opened by Lord Stafford, Patron of The Donna Louise Children’s Hospice Trust.

Entitled “The Burton Pavilion” the wooden structure will provide a protected and sheltered area in the grounds of the hospice so that the children staying there can enjoy being outdoors.

OLYMPIC SKIER HELPS TO CELEBRATE STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENTS

The Olympic skier, Ski Sunday anchor and presenter of BBC2’s High Altitude Graham Bell has been the guest of honour at a celebratory event organised to acknowledge the achievements of students at Burton College.

Held at Burton’s Town Hall, the Annual Awards Ceremony honoured 56 students for showing outstanding achievement and having developed high levels of technical and practical skills, sometimes having overcome significant personal difficulties and disadvantages along the way.

COLLEGE HOLDS FUN DAY FOR FRESHERS

A Fun Day and Freshers’ Fair has been held for over 2500 full time students, as part of their first week at Burton College.

Giant inflatable activities were sited outside the main entrance of the campus including a rodeo bull, surf simulator, bungee run and pole joust, whilst a barbeque was provided by the Catering staff and second year students, Creative Industries staff arranged the music and second year Dance students put on a performance.

SUPER TEACHER VISITS BURTON COLLEGE

An award winning teacher and star of the hit Channel 4 series The Unteachables and Can’t Read Can’t Write has spoken to teaching staff at Burton College.

Winner of the Secondary Teacher of the Year Award 2005 Phil Beadle, who is renowned for his inspirational teaching methods, delivered a presentation to staff members looking at high expectations, raising achievement levels and motivating students to reach their full potential.

COLLEGE LIBRARY WINS 100 PENGUIN CLASSICS

The library at Burton College has taken delivery of 100 Penguin Classic paperback books after winning the Most Entered prize in a prestigious national photographic competition.

Organised by Fujifilm Professional in conjunction with Penguin Books, the Fujifilm Student Awards are widely regarded as the most esteemed student photography awards in the country.

HAIRDRESSER WINS NATIONAL SKILLS FACTOR COMPETITION

A hairdressing apprentice from Burton College has beaten thousands of hopefuls from across the country to win a national Skills Factor competition designed to find the best young stylists in England.

Ellenora Dean (23) from Swadlincote, an NVQ Level 3 hairdressing apprentice who works at Uruku salon in Ashby, competed in the Hair & Beauty Industry Authority’s (Habia) Skills Factor competition to win one of only five places in the Skills Team for Hairdressing...

STUDENTS LAUNCH NEW DESIGN VENTURE

Two students from Burton College have launched a new business venture specialising in design.

Foundation Degree in Creative Arts for Employment students Darren Hooper (20) from Woodville and Scott Hall (20) from Swadlincote, have decided to combine their expertise in graphic design, 3D design and photography to open the business.

NEW SMALL BUSINESS SALON MANAGEMENT DEGREE LAUNCHED

A new Foundation Degree in Small Business Salon Management has been launched at Burton College, in conjunction with Staffordshire University, at an evening attended by beauty and hairdressing professionals from around the area.

Specifically designed to meet the demands of anyone wanting to work either freelance or manage a beauty therapy or hairdressing salon, the two year course can be studied part-time at the Lichfield Street campus.
