CHILDREN STAR IN FAME FACTORY SHOW

Local children aged between 7 and 16, have shown off their new-found dance and drama skills at a performance organised for their family and friends.

Held at Burton College’s Lichfield Street campus, the performance was organised as part of the Fame Factory Summer School, designed to explore a wide variety of dance and performance techniques.

COLLEGE HOLDS SUMMER SCHOOL TO IMPROVE LANGUAGE SKILLS

Over 50 local people, who do not have English as their first language, have completed a specially organised Summer School at Burton College.

The week long English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) School, which was held at the College’s Lichfield Street Campus, was designed to help those learners who will be starting new shorter, intensive ESOL classes in September, get used to the College environment.

COLLEGE CELEBRATES LONG SERVICE

A new club designed to celebrate long service has been launched at Burton College. With 27 members, the 25+ Club is dedicated to those members of staff who have served 25 years or more of continuous service.

To celebrate the launch a specially organised lunch was held in the College’s Mulberry Restaurant, which the members attended together with their husbands and wives.

ADVICE & GUIDANCE AT BURTON COLLEGE


Three Advice and Guidance Days are set to be held at Burton College this week, for anyone needing help with important decisions about leaving or staying on at school, course options and future careers, or for those wishing to join the wide variety of part time courses available.

Trained staff will be available on Thursday 27 August and Friday 28 August between 9.00am and 5.00pm and on Saturday 29 August from 9.00am until 12.00 noon, to provide advice and guidance on future career choices, course options and progression routes.

BURTON COLLEGE STUDENTS CELEBRATE 99% A LEVEL SUCCESS

A Level students at Burton College have achieved a 99% overall pass rate for the second year running, exceeding the national pass rate of 97.5%, whilst the number of students achieving grades A-C has risen by 9% to 77%, which also exceeds the national rate of 75.1%. In addition, 100% pass rates were achieved in 21 subjects including English Language & Literature, French, Physics, Graphic Design, Further Mathematics and Environmental Science.

STUDENTS BUILD PAVILION FOR CHILDREN’S HOSPICE

Timber Trades students from Burton College have completed a project to build a pavilion for the Treetops children’s hospice in Trentham, Stoke on Trent.

Set to be officially opened at an evening event in September, the wooden pavilion will provide a protected and sheltered area in the grounds of the hospice so that the children staying there can enjoy being outdoors. In addition, the structure will provide an extra place for residents and their families to meet.

NEW LANGUAGE COURSES LAUNCHED

A brand new series of courses has been launched at Burton College for people who do not have English as their first language and wish to improve their skills.

Designed to be shorter but more intensive, making achievement of a qualification quicker, the new English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses have been introduced in response to the increased level of demand for classes from the community.

ADULTS CELEBRATE ACHIEVEMENTS

Over 100 of Burton College’s adult students have been in the limelight at an informal Presentation Evening held at the Town Centre Campus. The students, who were all following the College’s Options for Adults and range of Access programmes, received certificates from College Principal & Chief Executive Dawn Ward OBE, in recognition of successfully passing their courses.

PHOTOGRAPHY STUDENTS WORK WITH DERBY PLAYING FOR SUCCESS

Two Photography students from Burton College have had their work published in two Playing For Success Derby brochures.

Steph Gilbert (20) and James Franklin (21) both from Lichfield, completed the live project as part of their National Diploma in Photography course, producing a series of images, which have been used in the scheme’s publicity material.

COLLEGE TESTS THE TOWN

Community organisations in and around Burton have been taking part in Test the Town; an initiative launched by Burton College aimed at improving adults’ maths skills.

Organised as part of the Government’s Move On campaign, a national scheme designed to encourage adults to brush up on their skills, Test the Town encouraged people to complete a fun quiz challenge, with multiple choice questions covering the maths skills needed for work and life. Completed forms were then entered into a draw to win a £50 Argos voucher.

CELEBRATING “TOWARDS INDEPENDENCE” SUCCESS

Learners at Burton College have attended a presentation, to celebrate their successful achievement of the ASDAN Towards Independence certificate.

Sixty learners, who are on the Learning for Life programme for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities, have been studying the certificate as part of their one year course, and have now achieved accreditation.
