COLLEGE HOLDS ANNUAL HAIR & BEAUTY COMPETITION

Around 200 Burton College students have been given the chance to demonstrate their skills at the College’s annual hairdressing and make-up competition, held at Bretby Conference Centre, which also raised £235 for Help For Heroes.

Hairdressing and Beauty students together with stylists from local salons training at the College on a part time basis, created a variety of looks in ten categories, ranging from blow dry, men’s cut, makeup and body painting through to ladies hair fashion and evening look together with taking part in a team competition to fashion a look inspired by the theme “Carnival”.

STUDENT MEETS LORD ALAN SUGAR

A Business student from Burton College has taken part in a Question and Answer session with Lord Alan Sugar as part of an event held for Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009.

National Diploma in Business second year Amii Nash (18) from Midway, was given the opportunity to ask Lord Sugar how he would recommend that a new IT Business should market itself during the current economic climate, at the 4 Entrepreneurs conference held at The Odeon in London’s Leicester Square, which was designed to inspire and motivate students through the experiences of four speakers, all themselves successful entrepreneurs.

COLLEGE RAISES ALMOST £3000 FOR CHILDREN IN NEED

Staff and students at Burton College have taken part in a packed day of fun events for this year’s Children in Need appeal, so far raising £2929.72 with money still to collect.

Across the Lichfield Street campus, people got involved in a variety of activities to raise money. Students and staff from the Early Years and Care area kidnapped the College Principal, held “I’m A Celebrity” style Bushtucker Trials, organised a “Buy a Guy” auction and staged a wedding ceremony whilst National Diploma in Business students embarked on a car wash and gave make-overs to lecturers and Student Officer Anthony Hemmings together with President of the Students’ Union Simon Holland took a spaghetti hoop bath.

ARRIVE ALIVE ROAD SAFETY TEAM VISIT COLLEGE

A representative from the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has visited Burton College to raise awareness of its Arrive Alive team, the award winning Road Safety Programme, dedicated to influencing young peoples’ attitudes towards learning to drive, the driving test and the longer term skill of safe driving for life.

Peter Newton delivered a presentation to students, which focused on the vulnerability of the new, young driver, the dangers of drinking and taking drugs when driving, the use of speed and its consequences when not used correctly and video footage highlighting the results of road traffic accidents.

COLLEGE ACHIEVES NATIONAL APPROVAL FOR ENGINEERING APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME

The Technological Industries area of learning at Burton College has been endorsed as an approved training provider by the national Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

As part of this, the Lichfield Street campus’s Engineering Technician apprenticeship scheme has been granted approval by IMechE’s Engineering Technician Qualifications Group (ETQG) for delivering the national requirements for registration as a professional Engineering Technician (EngTech).

STUDENTS ORGANISE SKY DIVE FOR CHARITY

Students from Burton College’s Uniformed Public Services Course have raised almost £900 for the When You Wish Upon A Star charity by taking part in a sponsored sky dive.

The group of six travelled to Target Skysports based at Hibaldstow Airfield in North Lincolnshire, to undergo a sponsored sky dive from a height of 12,000 feet, raising £897.90 in the process, which will be used to fund three children’s trips to Lapland this December to see Santa.

GET READY FOR CHRISTMAS

Later this month, a workshop will be held at Burton College, designed to introduce the art of Christmas Card Making.

Being held at the Lichfield Street campus on Saturday 28 November, from 10.00am until 1.00pm, the workshop will show people how to create hand made Christmas cards, crackers and gift tags.

Talking about the course, Community Education Coordinator Paula Senior said, “Christmas is always an expensive time of year, and finding creative and personal ways which can help reduce the cost is always useful.

COLLEGE & STAFFORDSHIRE VINVOLVED CELEBRATE MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY

An event designed to mark national Make A Difference Day has been held at Burton College.

Led by the charity Community Service Volunteers (CSV), Make A Difference Day is the country’s largest day of volunteering, with activities taking place this year from 24 October to 7 November.

Organised jointly by the College and Claire John from Staffordshire vinvolved, part of the national youth volunteering charity v, which aims to inspire a new generation of young volunteers, the 1940’s themed afternoon was attended by several elderly social groups including Age Concern Burton.

FANCY DRESS FOR CHILDREN IN NEED!

Staff and students at Burton College have planned a packed day of fun events for this year’s Children in Need, hoping to top the £3624 that was raised by the Lichfield Street Campus last year.

On Friday 20 November, the College’s hairdressing and beauty salon Innovations will be open to the public from 9.00am until 4.30pm, with all proceeds going to Children in Need. Clad in fancy dress, students will be offering a range of hairdressing and beauty treatments including blow drys, wet cuts, manicures, pedicures and facials with all the takings from the day being donated to the charity.

SUNDAY TIMES MAGAZINE ASSISTANT PICTURE EDITOR VISITS COLLEGE

A renowned assistant picture editor who has worked at the Sunday Times Magazine since 2004, has visited Burton College to talk to photography students about his work and career to date.

In his role as Assistant Picture Editor, Patrick Llewellyn, who learnt his trade freelancing on a variety of national newspapers including The Independent, The Sun and The Times, works closely with the world’s top photographic agencies, commissioning some of the finest reportage, art and portrait photographers working in the industry today.

STUDENTS EXHIBIT WORK FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Photography students are exhibiting a range of their work at Burton Library, as part of a series of activities arranged in honour of Black History Month.

Traditionally celebrated during October, Black History Month is designed to highlight and celebrate the achievements and embrace the contributions and traditions of the black community.

STUDENTS HOLD WEDDING FOR CHILDREN IN NEED

First year students from the Early Years and Care area at Burton College have kicked off their fund-raising effort for this year’s Children in Need appeal by holding a wedding ceremony.

The event, which saw bride Michael Smart and groom Yasmine Smith, who are both following the National Diploma in Health & Social Care course, tie the knot in a dramatisation of “First College Wedding”, was designed to raise funds for the annual appeal, which is heavily supported by the Lichfield Street campus.

During the “ceremony”, guests gave donations whilst also taking part in a number of activities including Catch the Bouquet and Guess The Weight of the Wedding Cake.

COLLEGE STAFF SPORT MOUSTACHES FOR PROSTATE CANCER CHARITY

Members of staff from Burton College are set to support this year’s annual Movember campaign to help raise awareness of men’s health issues.

As the team “Soup Strainers”, Paul Eaton, Alex Williams, Richard Eaton, Chris Beech, Julian Hughes, Andrew Tipper and Lance Scott-Jones from the Visual Arts area together with Reprographics Manager Chris Barker are growing moustaches for the month of November in support of The Movember Foundation’s annual health initiative, which is designed to raise funds and awareness for The Prostate Cancer Charity.

STUDENTS ORGANISE CHILDREN’S HALLOWEEN PARTY

Imaginative Burton College students have held a party to entertain children from the Lichfield Street campus’s nursery.

The event, which was based around the theme of Halloween, was organised by Travel and Tourism students as part of the Food Service With A Smile module of their course. During the afternoon, the children enjoyed a variety of activities including pin the nose on the witch and pass the pumpkin, together with themed food such as carrots made into witches’ broom sticks and bangers.
