| STUDENTS HOLD PHYSICAL THEATRE EVENING | ||
The Brewhouse in Burton has been the venue for an evening of physical theatre, interpreted and performed by dance and performing arts students from Burton College. A crossover between dance and drama involving a variety of physical styles of theatre from mime to slap-stick, the physical theatre evening comprised interpretations of a range of themes including media perception of the world. |

| PUPILS BOX CLEVER AT COLLEGE | ||
Almost one hundred Year 2 pupils from William Shrewsbury Primary School have enjoyed a lesson in woodwork, courtesy of Construction Crafts lecturers at Burton College. The children, who are all aged 6 or 7 years old, took part in “Boxing Clever”, an initiative based in the Lichfield Street Campus’s Wood Trades Workshop which involved the groups constructing their own wooden pencil boxes aided by College students and lecturers. |

| COUNCIL TRANSPORT MANAGER VISITS STUDENTS | ||
The Integrated Transport and Planning Unit Group Manager from Staffordshire County Council has visited Travel and Tourism students at Burton College to provide valuable career advice. Adrian Hunt, who is based at the Council offices in Stafford, spoke to the students about his role which involves managing the planning, delivery and organisation of services that affect local people using both public transport and the roads from timetable changes, responding to bad weather conditions and dealing with customer complaints to marketing, media enquiries and passenger surveys. |

| JANET DEAN MP VISITS LEARNERS | ||
Local MP Janet Dean has visited learners at Burton College to provide an insight into parliamentary life. Mrs Dean spoke to Learning for Life learners at the Lichfield Street campus about her role and responsibilities as a local MP together with providing a wider view of parliament as a whole. In addition, the learners, who have varying learning difficulties and disabilities, were invited to take part in a question and answer session. |

| SPONSORED CYCLE RIDES RAISE CASH FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK | ||
Members of staff and students from Burton College are set to take part in two charity cycle rides to raise money for Cancer Research UK, the College’s adopted charity. On the last weekend in May, riding the “Coast to Coast” cycle
route, which runs the 140 miles from Whitehaven to Sunderland, are Purchasing
Officer Jon Frowd, Curriculum Area Leader Catherine Gadsby and Assistant
Principal Standards & Development Garry Phillips, whilst Further Education
Sports Co-ordinator Angelo Nel together with sixty students will be participating
in a circular 17 mile ride around Rutland Water on Saturday 13 June. |

| COLLEGE HOLDS TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION | ||
Almost 400 students from Burton College’s Faculty of Technology have showcased a range of their work in a Technology Exhibition, designed to represent the wide and varied range of courses on offer. On show in the College’s £2.3 million Automotive & Engineering Skills Academy was a cross section of students’ practical projects including fabrication and welding, engineering and manufacturing, mechanical and electrical engineering, carpentry and joinery, brickwork, painting and decorating, plumbing and electrical installation. Additionally, demonstrations in computing, electronics and automotives maintenance took place. |

| GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVE VISITS COLLEGE | ||
A representative from the Government’s Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has visited Burton College to gain an insight into the work being done with local schools as part of the national 14-19 Strategy. Sue Baldwin, the Director Young People’s Participation and Attainment, spent the day at the Lichfield Street campus, seeing the facilities available and meeting a number of local Year 10 and 11 school pupils who currently attend the College weekly as Key Stage 4 pupils for work related learning. |

| STUDENTS RAISE MONEY FOR MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE | ||
Students from Burton College’s National Diploma in Sport course have taken part in a variety of activities to raise over £500 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Motor Neurone Disease (MND) affects around 500,000 people in the UK and The Association funds and promotes research to understand what causes the disease, how to diagnose it and how to effectively treat it. In addition, they campaign for better care and provide support and advice to both sufferers and carers. |

| STUDENTS ORGANISE SKY DIVE & BIATHLON FOR CHARITY | ||
Students from Burton College’s Public Services Course are set to take part in two fund-raising activities in order to raise money for the When You Wish Upon A Star charity. To launch their efforts, on Wednesday 3 June the group of six will travel to Target Skysports based at Hibaldstow Airfield in North Lincolnshire, to undergo a sponsored sky dive from a height of 12,000 feet. |

| VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS CELEBRATED AT COLLEGE | ||
A presentation has taken place at Burton College to celebrate the achievements of apprentices and employees who have gained qualifications as part of the national Train to Gain initiative. People were honoured for having achieved Foundation and Advanced Apprenticeships together with local employees who had gained a variety of Level 2 and 3 National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) under the Government’s Train To Gain service. |

| STUDENT ATTENDS NATIONAL SPORT & LEADERSHIP CAMP | ||
A student from Burton College has joined around 300 young sports leaders and volunteers from across the country to attend a national sport and leadership camp, designed to develop positive role model skills and teach new coaching qualifications. Nehemiah Daji (17) from Burton, a second year student on the College’s First Diploma in Sport course, was selected to attend the Step into Sport Camp 2009 by East Staffordshire Schools Sport Partnership in light of his active involvement in a number of sports and commitment to local voluntary projects. |

| APPRENTICES CELEBRATE SUCCESS IN AUTOMOBILE REGIONAL FINALS | ||
Two Burton College apprentices are amongst the top young tradespeople in the East Midlands after their performances at the Regional Area Finals of the national Automobile Technology competition. Organised as part of Worldskills UK, the competition is designed to promote excellence amongst young craftspeople in the UK, encouraging them to excel in their vocational area. |

| LEARNERS VISIT PARLIAMENT | ||
Learning for Life learners at Burton College have visited the Houses of Parliament as part of a Current Affairs and Employment Skills project they have undertaken. The learners, who have varying learning difficulties and disabilities, spent the day at the Houses of Parliament to see how law is made. This will be followed up later this month, when Janet Dean MP will visit the Lichfield Street campus to make a presentation about life in Parliament and hold a question and answer session. |

| MUSIC TECHNOLOGY STUDENTS VISIT NEW YORK | ||
Students from Burton College’s three Music Technology courses have spent five days in New York on a trip designed to provide an insight into the broadcasting and recording industries and the various career opportunities open to them. As part of the visit, the group were given tours of the main American television network studios NBC together and one of the city’s finest state of the art music recording studios Skyline Studios, where recent clients include Shakira and Avril Lavigne. |

| FREE IT TASTER WORKSHOPS ON OFFER | ||

Burton College in conjunction with Paget High School, is offering local people the chance to attend a free IT Taster workshop as part of Adult Learners’ Week; a national event held to encourage adults of all ages and abilities into learning. Running on Thursday 14 May at the Branston school, there will be a morning workshop, held between 10.00am and 12 noon, which is designed for beginners or those people who need to build their confidence in using a computer. |
