| COLLEGE RECEIVES HSE APPROVAL FOR FIRST AID COURSES | ||
Burton College has been endorsed as an approved First Aid training organisation by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE); the national body responsible for health and safety at work. Following changes to legislation last October, all training providers
are now required to have a revised Certificate of Approval covering both
First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid training. As part of this, the
College’s town centre campus received an inspection at the end of
2009, and was deemed to have met the necessary criteria required to be
fully approved. |

| BRITISH JOURNAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD WINNER VISITS COLLEGE | ||
The winner of the British Journal of Photography’s (BJP) International Photography Award 2009 has visited Burton College to talk to photography students about his work and career to date. Edmund Clark who won the category in last year’s Awards for Guantanamo: If The Light Goes Out, a project documenting the consequences of confinement on former Guantanamo Bay detainees, had his work chosen from more than 150 projects submitted. |

| STUDENTS ROW & CYCLE FOR SPORT RELIEF | ||
Sports students from Burton College are set to row and cycle the equivalent of travelling from John O’Groats to Land’s End in aid of this year’s national Sport Relief campaign. Organised to coincide with the national Sport Relief Weekend, which will be held from 19 - 21 March, the team of sixteen Foundation Degree and HND students are aiming to travel the 603 miles in the five days from 15 – 19 March. Using exercise cycles and rowing machines loaned by Fitness First for the week, the students will be based in the College’s refectory and plan to encourage fellow students to take part and help reach the target. |

| NEW SPORT DIPLOMA LAUNCHED | ||
Representatives from local employers have attended an event designed to launch a new, national qualification borne out of the Government’s educational reforms for 14-19 year olds. Organised by Burton College in partnership with Granville Community School and East Staffordshire 14-19 District Partnership and the School Improvement Division, and held at Branston Golf & Country Club, the evening introduced the new Higher Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure, which will be available from September 2010. |

| STUDENTS TAKE TO THE TREADMILLS FOR CHARITY | ||
Dance and Theatre Arts students at Burton College have taken part in a fancy-dress sponsored walk to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. Wearing pyjamas, the ten Foundation Degree students took to the treadmills at Fitness First, walking for five hours to raise almost £100. Talking about the fund-raising, Lecturer Kevin Sutton said, “Taking part in charity events helps to equip our students with the skills and knowledge to be able to make a valuable contribution to the wider community. Coronary heart disease is the biggest killer in the country. |

| STUDENTS TO TAKE PART IN NATIONAL FINALS OF TOP COMPETITION | ||
Two students from Burton College are set to compete in the National Finals of the country's top hairdressing and beauty therapist championships later this week. NVQ Level 3 Beauty Therapy student Tiffany Smith (18) from Tutbury and
Afsana Bi (18) from Derby, who is following the NVQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy
course, will be taking part in the UK National Finals of the renowned
Association of Hairdressers and Therapists UK Trainee Competition, which
will be held at the Winter Gardens Hair Festival in Blackpool on Friday
5 March. |
