COLLEGE APPOINTS FIRST STUDENT UNION PRESIDENT

The first President of the Students’ Union has been elected at Burton College following an election campaign.

Simon Holland (20) from Coton in the Elms, who will commence the twelve month post later in the summer, will represent the 13,000 students at the College, providing them with a voice together with helping them to make the most of their time at College through wide-ranging services and activities provision. In addition the appointment will offer opportunities for representation of the student body locally and nationally.

LEARNER WINS BEST STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARD

Burton College learner Paul Qualter has received a Best Student of the Year Award, from the Institute of Motor Industry.

Together with five fellow Learning For Life learners, who have varying degrees of learning difficulties and disabilities, Paul has been studying basic vehicle maintenance and road safety with the College’s Motor Vehicle section. The group followed the one year programme, which is accredited by the national Institute of Motor Industry, as part of their course.

“NEVER TOO LATE TO LEARN” CELEBRATE WITH STRAWBERRY TEA

Local historian Richard Stone has been the guest of honour at a presentation and summer strawberry tea to celebrate the end of tern of Burton College’s Never Too Late To Learn programme.

The group have all been attending the programme, which is designed for the over 50s, regularly on Wednesdays since September and have learnt about a wide variety of subjects ranging from poetry, history, literature, language, culture and food to practical sessions on hand massage and learning the ukulele. In addition, the group have enjoyed several days out including a visit to Rosliston Forestry Centre.

ACCOUNTANTS WIN SILVER MEDALS IN NATIONAL FINAL

A team of three accounting students from Burton College are celebrating after a winning performance in the National UK Finals of a prestigious competition held in London.

As part of “Burton’s Best”, a team name chosen to reflect the town’s brewing heritage, Andrew Briers a trainee accounting technician at Burton College, Steph Jones who works as an Accounts Manager at Leisure Vehicle Services Ltd and Accounts Payable Clerk Laura James who is employed at International Hotels Group, won silver medals in the finals of the WorldSkills UK Accounting Technician Skills.

COLLEGE HOLDS HAIR, BEAUTY & NAIL SHOW

A live catwalk show, held at Burton’s Belvedere Park Club, has showcased the talents of up and coming hair stylists and beauty therapists of the future, whilst also raising money for Jo’s Trust; the only UK charity dedicated to cervical cancer.

Over 200 students from Burton College’s Faculty of Creative Studies took part in the End Of Year Show, which was designed to demonstrate all of the techniques they had learnt over their year’s study. Entitled The End of An Era”, the show featured creations, based around the theme of the fashions of decades including the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s.

COLLEGE TO RUN FAME FACTORY DANCE SUMMER SCHOOL

A Summer School designed to explore a wide variety of dance and performance techniques, is to be held at Burton College.

Open to anyone over the age of seven, the Fame Factory school will cover various dance techniques from jazz and ballet to contemporary and cheerleading. In addition, skills such as musical theatre, stage acting and singing will all be taught.

The school will run for one week from Monday 17 August until Friday 21 August, with classes designed specifically for those aged between 7 and 14, and those over the age of 14.

COLLEGE RECOGNISES SCHOOL PUPILS’ ACHIEVEMENTS

Local school pupils have been presented with trophies at a special Awards Ceremony designed to honour their hard work and determination. The students attended the afternoon, which was held at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium, with their parents, together with representatives from local businesses and schools.

STUDENTS WIN POETRY AWARDS

Three students from Burton College have received a Poetry Award in recognition of their creativity and originality.

Open to students in the College’s Sixth Form and Continuing Education section, the Jaunie Fisher Poetry Award has been established by the College’s Sixth Form in honour of English lecturer Jaunie Fisher who died in February 2007 following a battle with cancer.

LEARNING PAINTING & DECORATING SKILLS

Adults with varying degrees of learning difficulties and disabilities have been acknowledged for their achievements in completing a Painting and Decorating course at Burton College.

The learners, who are following the College’s Learning For Life programme, have been studying basic painting and decorating for the past year as part of their studies. The group, received certificates of achievement at a presentation, organised to recognise their success in acquiring a new skill.

HEALTH & SAFETY OFFICER SET TO TAKE PART IN HADRIAN’S WALL TREK

A Health & Safety Officer from Burton College is set to take part in the demanding Hadrian’s Wall Weekend Trek Challenge this summer.

In August, James Woodings, together with his sister Lyn, will be trekking for 25 miles alongside the only remaining sections of the wall through Northumberland National Park, in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Talking about the forthcoming challenge, James says, “My brother-in-law has recently passed away after suffering from MS for a long time, so the charity is very close to both mine and my sister’s heart.

COLLEGE LEARNER SHORTLISTED FOR LEARNDIRECT ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

At this year’s learndirect Achievement Awards Ceremony, learner Aloma McGill was shortlisted in the Individual Learner Award Category for Progression, recognising her determination to succeed and commitment to studying.

An annual event, the learndirect Achievement Awards are designed to celebrate the achievements of learners who have displayed outstanding commitment to their studies achieving exceptional standards, and whose work and ability stands out from the crowd.

AIMHIGHER ROADSHOW VISITS COLLEGE

The Government’s Aimhigher Roadshow has visited Burton College to provide information and advice to students about going to University and the opportunities available.

A national programme run by the Higher Education Funding Council for England with support from the Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills, Aimhigher aims to widen participation in higher education by raising the awareness, aspirations and attainment of young people. Traveling to schools and colleges around the country, the roadshow promotes the benefits and dispels the myths about higher education through a presentation by a recent graduate and interactive DVDs.

NEW CHAIR OF GOVERNORS APPOINTED

A new Chair of Governors has been announced at Burton College. Local solicitor Andrew Phillips, who has been a College Governor since 2001 has taken over the role following Adrian Argyle’s retirement from the post of Chair after eight years.

A solicitor in private practice for the last 35 years, Andrew (59) cites sailing, keep fit and archaeology amongst his hobbies together with classical and medieval history, blues, folk and rock music. He is also interested in Spanish history and cuisine, recently completing a three year part-time Spanish course at the College.

STUDENTS HOLD AWARDS CEREMONY

Students from Burton College have held an Awards Ceremony to celebrate achievement on a variety of Business Administration courses.

In total, 33 students were honoured during the ceremony, which was held in the College’s University Centre, for their high levels of achievement, technical and practical skills. In addition, a Student of the Group was chosen for each of the four courses involved, nominated by fellow members of the group in light of their attendance levels, commitment to the course, quality of work, enthusiasm and motivation.

COLLEGE HOLDS BRIDAL HAIRDRESSING COMPETITION

Up and coming hairstylists of the future have taken part in a hairdressing competition organised by Burton College at its Lichfield Street hairdressing salon.

Around 26 Year 10 and 11 pupils from Abbot Beyne, De Ferrers, John Taylor, Paget, Paulet, Pingle, Robert Sutton, Thomas Alleyne’s and William Allitt schools were given the chance to demonstrate their skills in a Creative Bridal Competition, which was organised as part of their attendance at the College, which they visit weekly as Key Stage 4 pupils, for work related learning; gaining practical experience in hairdressing together with an insight into life at college.
