A Guide to Qualifications
AS Level
Single subject course, available at Burton College in over 30 subjects.
This is the first part of an A Level and is also a qualification in
its own right, valued by universities and employers.
A Level
Single subject course, available in a wide range of subjects, usually
completed in two years. It is made up of an AS and A Level in the same
subject, and is designed to prepare you for Higher Education and employment.
BTEC Diplomas
Available at First, National and Higher Level, according to your qualifications,
these courses are designed to give you the knowledge and skills for Higher
Education or employment. A Levels can be combined with these courses,
again depending on your qualifications.
Diplomas
The new diplomas are specialist qualifications which will give young people
an insight into work and provide the skills, knowledge and understanding
they need for further or higher education and employement. To find out

NVQs
A NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is available at different levels
and related to a specific career. They are designed to give you the skills
for a particular job and are offered full-time, part-time or as part of
an Apprenticeship.
Key Skills
All full-time students have the chance to study for Key Skills awards.
Achievement is based on Communication, Application of Number and IT. This
qualification is available at three levels, depending on your GCSE results.

This course is designed for those who left school with few or no qualifications.

These courses are suitable for those who will achieve at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, usually including English and Maths.
