Studying at Burton College as an Overseas Student

We hope that you are considering Burton College to continue your education in the UK. In order to obtain a student visa it is necessary to have an offer of a place on a full time course. Further information about our College courses can be found elsewhere on our website.

In order to gain entry to Britain for the purpose of study it will be necessary to provide evidence of a your ability to pay fees and living expenses. This information will be required by the British Embassy or Consulate when you apply for visa but the College will also require you to complete the attached Certificate of Financial Responsibility.

How to make your application

The first stage is to apply for a full time course. This must be a specific course that we offer and you must include the course code. Please do not use a general title such as ‘business’ or ‘engineering’ Please also make sure you have the entry qualifications – you should read the notes below about UKNARIC.

The second stage is that the College will consider your application and make you a provisional offer if you meet all the entry requirements. At that stage you will be required to pay a deposit of £1000 (you can find details about our course fees below).

When we receive this deposit we will send you a firm offer letter which you can use to apply for a student visa.

If you wish to apply for a full-time course at this College you should forward to me as soon as possible.

(a) The completed application form
(b) A photocopy of any certificate that shows your English language ability. If you do not have this you may need to take an International English Language test such as IELTS or TOEFL. Contact your local British Consulate or British Embassy for advice.
(c) Written evidence of educational qualifications and your last school or college report (please supply photocopies). It is vital that these are in a form that relates to an equivalent UK qualification. See the notes below for more information about this.
(d) The completed Certificate of Financial Responsibility.

When we receive these documents, consideration will be given to your application for the course. We do stress, however, that it will not be possible to consider your application unless all the items (a) to (d) are submitted.

International Comparisons Of Qualifications

A Service for Overseas Students

It is important that you can show the College that you have the qualifications required for entry to the course. We will not be able to consider your application if we do not understand the qualifications you have gained in your own country.

People with qualifications from outside the UK can access the following service.

You can send copies of your qualifications, certificates etc to the address below and you will be supplied with a comparison of the equivalent UK qualifications.

There is a small charge for this service to individuals.

If you are considering applying to a college course it is vital that you obtain this information so that we can be sure that you have the necessary entry qualification.

Studying In Burton Upon Trent

Burton upon Trent is a large town in the Midlands close to the cities of Birmingham and Derby. It is also close to the Peak District National Park and is approximately three hours from London. It is therefore a central place to study in England.

The cost of living is lower than in many parts of the UK. The population is culturally diverse with a variety of ethnic restaurants and places of religious worship.

Living Expenses

Living expenses can vary from individual to individual but to allow for visits to the cinema, leisure centre, ten-pin bowling, going out in the evenings or at weekends and any personal items you may wish to buy, it is advisable to budget about £40-£50 per week.

Accommodation

The College does not have its own accommodation but we will help to arrange a place to live. The type of accommodation can vary, as can the costs. To live with a family where you have your own room and have breakfast and evening meal provided would cost approximately £120 per week. Alternatively you could rent a room in a house for about £50 per week, where you would have to provide your own meals and pay for the usage of gas and electricity. Hotel accommodation costs about £120 per week for two people sharing a room with breakfast and evening meal provided. There are also a limited number of flats for rent in the town starting at about £80 per week.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees are currently £5,700 per year for courses such as ‘A’ levels, BTEC National Diplomas and GNVQs and £10,000 for HNDs and Degrees. There may be a small increase for the next academic year. Unfortunately the College does not have any scholarship schemes to help with payment of fees. At least half of the total fees must be paid by the time you enrol but it is possible to pay the remainder in instalments.

In addition all students must pay external examination registration fees.
