WorldSkills UK

WorldSkills UK are quality assured skills competitions. Run annually these competitions aim to encourage people across the UK to excel in their vocational skill.

From 5-8 October 2011, the UK will be hosting WorldSkills London 2011, the largest international vocational skills competition in the world. The four day event, held in London’s docklands, will be the most exciting, inspiring and interactive skills competition that the world has ever seen.

Be inspired... excel... achieve... get involved!

We take a look at Burton College students who got involved in WorldSkills competitions from 2009…

Chris Wileman
'The talented mechanic'
Burton College apprentice, Chris Wileman, was acknowledged as one of the country’s top young technicians after his winning performance in the Regional Area Finals of a prestigious competition secured him a place in the National UK Finals.

Organised as part of Worldskills UK, the competition was designed to promote excellence amongst young craftspeople in the UK, encouraging them to excel in their vocational area. The apprentices competed against each other within the job role of an automobile technician testing a range of skills from diagnostics to maintenance and repair of vehicles.

Ellenora Dean
'The budding stylist'
Hairdressing apprentice, Ellenora Dean beat thousands of hopefuls from across the country to win a national Skills Factor competition designed to find the best young stylists in England.

Run along similar lines to the X Factor, the Skills Factor was designed to find the next generation of hairdressing stars amongst apprentices aged between 16 and 25.

 

Laura James, Andrew Briers and Steph Jones
'The accounting geniuses'
Laura James, Andrew Briers and Steph Jones won silver medals in the finals of the WorldSkills UK Accounting Technician Skills 2009. The three won through to the finals after they came first in their regional heat for the Midlands.

The competition was open to Accounting Technicians wishing to showcase their financial expertise and team working skills and provided an invaluable opportunity to test skills nationally against other teams.

 

Sadie Jones
'The gifted painter and decorator'
Sadie Jones, who studied Decorative Occupations was confirmed as being amongst the top young trades people in the East Midlands after her performance at the Regional Area Finals of the national Skillbuild competition which was sponsored by CITB-ConstructionSkills and Jewson.

As part of WorldSkills UK, the Skillbuild competition is designed to showcase the talents of construction students in a wide range of disciplines.
