Hospitality students from Burton College have taken part in a competition designed to showcase their patisserie skills. Sponsored by Burton Rotary Club, the Young Chef of the Year competition, which was held at the Lichfield Street campus’s Mulberry Training Kitchen and Restaurant, saw the first year students compete against each other to create, cook and present a cold dessert of their choice. |

| STUDENTS TAKE TO THE TREADMILLS FOR CHARITY | ||
Dance and Theatre Arts students at Burton College are set to take part in a fancy-dress sponsored walk to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. Wearing pyjamas, the ten Foundation Degree students will take to the treadmills at Fitness First on Monday 8 February, walking for five hours to raise money for the charity. Talking about the fund-raising, Lecturer Kevin Sutton said, “Taking part in charity events helps to equip our students with the skills and knowledge to be able to make a valuable contribution to the wider community. |

| STUDENTS TO TAKE PART IN REGIONAL FINALS OF TOP COMPETITION | ||
Over 30 students from Burton College are set to compete in the Regional Finals of the country's top hairdressing and beauty therapist championships. Those taking part will travel to Lincoln College to compete in the UK Regional Finals of the renowned Association of Hairdressers and Therapists UK Trainee Competition, which will be held on Monday 1 February. |

| PERFORMANCE STUDENTS TO HOLD DIRECTING SHOWCASE | ||
The Brewhouse at Burton is set to be the venue for two evening showcases of performance work interpreted, directed and acted by students from Burton College. “The Directing Showcase” will be performed by students on a range of performing arts and performance courses, and will comprise interpreted extracts of up to fourteen well known plays ranging from the classical to the contemporary. |

Those who attend Burton College’s Never Too Late To Learn programme have enjoyed an afternoon of pampering, courtesy of the Lichfield Street campus’s salon Innovations. The group who attend the weekly classes designed for the over 50’s received mini-facials and information on a variety of anti-ageing treatments from trained Beauty Therapy lecturer Jane Ward, including how to cleanse, tone and moisturise mature skin. |

| STAFFORDSHIRE FIRE SERVICE PROVIDE ADVICE TO STUDENTS | ||
Four representatives from Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service have visited Burton College to raise awareness of fire safety and prevention. Crew Manager Jason Gardiner and Risk Reduction Crew Manager Anjum Riaz together with Fire Fighters Danny Shea and Cliff Moore, gave the students a presentation about home safety covering smoke alarms, escape routes, kitchen safety, smoking safely and electrical safety. In addition, students were made aware of the free home fire risk check service that the Service offers, which involves a Firefighter or Service Technician visiting you in your home to provide fire safety advice, discuss escape routes and fit free life saving equipment such as smoke alarms and fire guards. |

A catering consultant and ex chef has visited Burton College to share his expertise on food hygiene with those who attend the Never Too Late To Learn programme, designed for the over 50’s. Geoff Thomas spoke to the group about various aspects of basic food hygiene in the home including the causes of food poisoning, practical ways of how to improve hygiene and how to cook food safely. In addition, Geoff gave advice on food hygiene during special occasions and the important things to look out for when eating out. |

In his role as the Food & Beverage Manager of the hotel, which is located in Newton Solney, George French spoke to the group about life working within a hotel, the various career opportunities available and how to be successful. |

A representative from one of the leading operators on aviation ground services has visited Travel and Tourism students at Burton College to provide valuable career advice and give an insight into life in the Tourism Industry. In his role as Trainer for Servisair, based at East Midlands Airport, Jeremy Cheshire spoke to the students about working as a check-in agent at the airport together with the various career opportunities available to them with Servisair as part of ground handling crew. |

| STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT SPEED SCHEME FOR NEW BUSINESS VENTURES | ||
Representatives from Staffordshire University have visited Burton College to talk to Applied Information Technology undergraduates about a new scheme available for those wishing to start their own businesses alongside their studies. Offering wide-ranging support to help turn business ideas into reality, whilst providing the skills needed to run a company, the SPEED Scheme is a collaborative programme based in universities across the West Midlands. Open to those studying on courses accredited by Staffordshire University, the twelve month Scheme provides a £1500 business development grant and one year’s free business accommodation, together with benefits such as free use of meeting room facilities, business start-up training and mentoring support. |

| FOOTBALL LIAISON OFFICER VISITS STUDENTS | ||
A representative from Staffordshire Police’s Football Liaison Office has visited Uniformed Public Services students at Burton College to provide an insight into police control at football matches. The visit was organised as part of The Planning and Management Of Major Incidents module of their course, which looks at how legislation has changed the face of football since the Bradford and Hillsborough tragedies. The Ex Police Sergeant spent the afternoon discussing the role of the office in helping to make football matches safe and enjoyable events. |
