| LOCAL FAMILIES CELEBRATE THE NATIONAL FAMILY LEARNING FESTIVAL | ||
Local families have joined Burton College’s Family Learning Team to celebrate the Campaign for Learning’s National Family Learning Festival (FLF), at a series of fun events themed around Healthy Living. Running from 17 – 31 October, FLF is the biggest annual celebration of family learning. An annual awareness campaign, it is designed to get families together in fun, informal learning and aims to draw attention to the importance of family learning and skills. |

| COLLEGE RAISES OVER £6000 FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK | ||
Staff and students from Burton College have raised over £6000 for Cancer Research UK following a year’s programme of activities. Across the Lichfield Street campus, people got involved in a range of activities to raise £6420.66 from sponsored cycle rides and carol singing to organising a Performing Arts End of Year Cabaret, clothing collection, raffles and charity themed lunch. |

| VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS CELEBRATED AT COLLEGE | ||
A presentation has taken place at Burton College to celebrate the achievements of apprentices and employees who have gained qualifications as part of the national Train to Gain initiative. People were honoured for having achieved Foundation and Advanced Apprenticeships together with local employees who had gained a variety of Level 2 and 3 National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) under the Government’s Train To Gain service. |

| CATERING STUDENTS TAKE PART IN ARMY CATERING COMPETITION | ||
Two teams of Professional Catering students from Burton College have achieved bronze awards in this year’s Start Thinking Soldier Catering Competition. Organised by the Army’s West Midlands Brigade, the competition, which was held at MOD Stafford, saw the two teams of four compete against 21 teams from across the region including Stoke on Trent, Stafford and South Staffordshire colleges. |

In recognition of its continued commitment to over 700 members of staff, Burton College has signed the Government’s Skills Pledge. The hard work, determination and achievements of Foundation Skills students have been honoured at a presentation evening held at Burton College’s Lichfield Street Campus. Amongst those celebrating on the evening were students Jack Kelly and Kevin Aston who achieved the highest level of qualification ever seen on the programme. |

| PHOTOGRAPHER VANLEY BURKE VISITS COLLEGE | ||
A renowned photographer, who for over 30 years has documented black social history in Britain exhibiting extensively across the UK and abroad, has visited Burton College to talk to photography students about his work and career to date. Based in Birmingham, Vanley Burke started photographing daily life in the black community of Handsworth in 1967, from worship and baptism in a local church to family weddings and birthdays. |

| APPRENTICES OF THE YEAR HONOURED | ||
Four apprentice electricians have been honoured for their hard work, determination and commitment by being named Apprentice of the Year. Sponsored by LH Electrical Wholesalers, the awards, which have been presented for the first time this year, were established to acknowledge those first, second and third year apprentices who have shown outstanding levels of commitment and dedication to their training together with achieving a very high standard of work. |

An event designed to identify abilities has been held to provide young people with disabilities and learning difficulties the opportunity to explore different sporting activities. The day, which was jointly hosted at Shobnall Sports Hall by Burton College and East Staffordshire Schools Sport Partnership, was designed to introduce a variety of sports to learners with disabilities and learning difficulties from 20 infant and primary schools across East Staffordshire. |

The Employer Engagement service at Burton College has welcomed a renowned communications expert to deliver a series of new courses. Scott Alford, who is originally from Melbourne in Australia, joins the College with ten year’s experience in the communications field, having worked with a wide variety of companies, in a number of sectors, across Australia, India, America and the United Kingdom including Mercedes-Benz, Ernst & Young and more locally, Kerry Foods and Johnson Controls. |

| COLLEGE RAISES OVER £400 FOR JEANS FOR GENES | ||
Staff and students at Burton College have taken part in this year’s national Jeans for Genes Day, raising £415.22. Organised by the national children’s charity Jeans for Genes, the Day is an annual event designed to raise money to help children and families affected by genetic disorders, funding support services and research into the causes and cures of these conditions. To help raise funds, Catering students ran a home-made cake stall whilst students from the Early Years and Care area collected donations across the Lichfield Street campus. |

| TRAINING RESTAURANT OPENS TO THE PUBLIC | ||
Burton College’s Mulberry training restaurant has opened its doors to the public for lunches, bistro evenings and gourmet themed evenings. In addition and new for this year, the restaurant will be open between 10.00am and 11.00am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, serving coffee and pastries. Lunches are available between 12 noon and 2.00pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, when a three course meal and coffee costs £7.75. For those in a hurry a special two course express lunch plus coffee will be on offer at £6.75. |

| WT PARKER GROUP AND COLLEGE ESTABLISH TRAINING PARTNERSHIP | ||
Electrical and mechanical building services company WT Parker Group has joined in partnership with Burton College in a new initiative designed to deliver management training to members of its staff. As part of the programme, the first group of ten middle and senior managers
have successfully completed the Institute of Leadership and Management
(ILM) Level 3 Certificate in Management, after attending weekly classes
at the Lichfield Street campus, individually tailored to meet the company’s
specific development needs. |
