STUDENTS SHOWCASE DANCE WORK

The Brewhouse at Burton has been the venue for two evening showcases of dance work performed by students from Burton College.

The showcase, which was entitled “Danceworks 9”, was performed by students on a wide range of dance courses, from GCSE to Foundation Degree, and included contemporary dance, ballet, jazz and musical theatre.

LEARNERS PRESENT CHEQUE TO CHURCH FUND

Learning for Life learners at Burton College have presented a cheque to a local farmer as a donation to his local church.

The group, who have varying degrees of learning difficulties and disabilities, visit Robert Leedham’s farm near Clifton Campville, which houses an extensive collection of tractors and farm vehicles, as part of the basic vehicle maintenance and road safety they study with the College’s Motor Vehicle section.

STAFFORDSHIRE POLICE PROVIDE ADVICE TO STUDENTS

A Community Police Officer from Staffordshire Police has visited Burton College to give advice and guidance to students.

PC Francesca Taylor spoke to the students about the role of community policing in Burton including how to report crime, personal safety and their rights with regards to the stop and search procedure.

COLLEGE STAFF SPORT MOUSTACHES FOR PROSTATE CANCER CHARITY

Members of staff from Burton College have supported this year’s annual Movember campaign by growing moustaches and raising £400 for The Prostate Cancer Charity.

As the team “Soup Strainers”, Paul Eaton, Alex Williams, Richard Eaton, Chris Beech, Julian Hughes, Andrew Tipper, Vincent Warren and Lance Scott-Jones from the Visual Arts area together with Reprographics Manager Chris Barker and Lecturer Jason Barnett grew moustaches for the month of November in support of The Movember Foundation’s annual health initiative, which is designed to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer.

JANET DEAN VISITS COLLEGE STUDENTS

Local MP Janet Dean has visited Uniformed Public Services students at Burton College to discuss the subject of Citizenship, its importance in helping people to make a valuable contribution to society and how knowledge of it can benefit individuals.

During the morning Mrs Dean discussed how the nature of a democracy is derived from Citizenship education, which equips people with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand how society works and therefore be able to play an active role and contribute to the political process.

TOYOTA MANUFACTURING UK & BURTON COLLEGE CELEBRATE FIRST WAVE OF ACHIEVEMENTS

The first people to achieve qualifications as part of an initiative to train over 3500 employees have had their achievements recognised at a presentation held at Toyota Manufacturing UK.

The 557 employees, who are employed by the Burnaston based car manufacturer, had successfully completed qualifications following the introduction of a training programme established in partnership with Burton College.

COLLEGE HOLDS GRADUATION CEREMONY AT TOWN HALL

One of the country’s most successful female entrepreneurs has been the guest of honour at a Graduation Ceremony held to celebrate the achievements of Higher Education students at Burton College.

Kavita Oberoi founder and Managing Director of Pride Park’s Oberoi Consulting, and widely known from her appearance on Channel 4’s hit show The Secret Millionaire, attended the event, which was held at Burton’s Town Hall during National College’s Week, addressed the students and their guests before the Awards were conferred.

COMPETITION WINNERS ANNOUNCED AT BURTON PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY’S EXHIBITION

The winners of Burton Photographic Society’s Open Competition 2009 have been announced at the club’s annual exhibition, held at Stretton’s Priory Centre.

Run for non-members, the Competition, which was sponsored by Burton College and independently judged, required entrants to submit three prints, which were then judged on their composition, originality, creativity, subject matter and lighting.
