| COLLEGE PRINCIPAL RECEIVES CITY & GUILDS HIGHEST AWARD | ||
The Principal and Chief Executive of Burton College has been honoured for her professional and personal achievements within further education, receiving the Council of the City & Guilds of London Institute’s (FCGI) highest award of Fellowship. Dawn Ward OBE was conferred with the award at the country’s leading vocational awarding organisation’s Yearly Meeting, which was held at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London, during which Mrs Ward was acknowledged for her commitment to the development of skills and participation in international competition through vocational training and learning. |

| COMMUNITY DRAMA FESTIVAL HELD AT THE BREWHOUSE | ||
Burton’s Brewhouse has been the venue for a community drama festival. Organised by Foundation Degree in Dance & Theatre Arts students at Burton College as a sister project to the successful Unite Dance Festival, the Unite Drama Festival was designed to celebrate a wide range of theatre currently being practised and developed within the local area. |

| STUDENTS HELP WITH QUEEN’S HOSPITAL SCANNER APPEAL | ||
A representative from Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has visited Burton College to collect a cheque from students who have helped to raise almost £1500 for the half a million pounds Scanner Appeal. CT Fundraising Co-ordinator Lauren Docksey visited the Lichfield Street campus to collect the funds, which were raised by members of the Student Council who acted as volunteers for the Appeal’s event organised at Uttoxeter Racecourse in March. |

| STUDENTS TRY OUT LEADING EDGE WELDING EQUIPMENT | ||
Engineering and Motor Vehicle students at Burton College have had the opportunity to try out the very latest in welding technology. Foundation Engineering students and first year apprentices who work for
a variety of local companies, were introduced to a cutting-edge welding
simulator system. Loaned for the day by Sheffield based Lincoln Electric
(UK), suppliers of industry leading welding and cutting equipment, the
VRTEX Welding Simulator is an educational training tool aimed at preparing
students for practical activities using a selection of virtual reality
welding processes. |

| LOUDMOUTH THEATRE COMPANY VISIT COLLEGE | ||
Loudmouth, one of the country’s premier Theatre in Health Education companies, has visited Burton College to raise awareness of Chlamydia in young people through a drama presentation and workshop, encouraging them to take part in a mass screening programme. Entitled “Trust Me”, the play discussed issues around contraception, sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy, looking at sexual health and exploring the difficulties many young people face in accessing and using contraception. |

| YOUNG CHEFS CELEBRATE SUCCESS IN WORLDSKILLS UK COOKING COMPETITION | ||
Eight Burton College apprentices are amongst the top young chefs in the country following their winning performances at the Wessex Salon Culinaire cooking competition, which altogether netted them nine bronze and three silver medals. Organised as part of Worldskills UK, in association with UK Skills, this
is a skills competition designed by leading industry experts to help raise
the standards of training and performance at work whilst encouraging young
people across the country to excel in their skill area. |

| STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR WELLA PROFESSIONALS XPOSURE | ||
Two budding hairdressers from Burton College have been successful in winning places in a Regional Heat of the prestigious Wella Professionals Xposure 2010 Competition. Full-time NVQ Level 3 student Gemma Cawser (18) from Burton, and NVQ
Level 3 apprentice Ellenora Dean (23) from Swadlincote, who is employed
at the Uruku salon in Ashby, will travel to the Wella studios in Manchester
on Thursday 22 April to take part in one of four Regional Heats, which
are happening across the country as part of this renowned competition. |

| LOCAL PUPILS ENJOY CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGE | ||
Local school pupils have taken part in a CITB Challenge Day, which was held at Burton College. The day was one of three Regional Qualifiers with other events also taking place at Stoke and Stafford. Organised by the College, Staffordshire Partnership and the CITB (Awarding Body for Construction), the event was designed to assist the students in developing a range of key teamwork skills by taking part in a variety of physical, practical and challenging activities whilst having fun. |

| ENTREPRENEUR ACCEPTS PATRONAGE OF COLLEGE | ||
Burton College has welcomed one of the country’s most successful female entrepreneurs as a Patron. Kavita Oberoi founder and Managing Director of Pride Park’s Oberoi Consulting, and widely known from her appearance on Channel 4’s hit show The Secret Millionaire, is set to lend her support to the Lichfield Street campus’s drive to raise the aspirations of young people, helping them to achieve to their full potential. |

The first ever Student Conference has been organised by Burton College, designed to allow members of the Student Council to discuss their views and ideas with staff members and governors. Held at Branston Golf and Country Club, the event was attended by 60 members of the Student Council including President of the Students’ Union Simon Holland, College Principal and Chief Executive Dawn Ward OBE and senior College Managers together with course representatives. |

National Diploma in Performing Arts students have held a Variety Performance at Burton’s Brewhouse as part of their final major project. The two evenings featured interpreted extracts of ‘His Dark Materials’ by Phillip Pullman, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare and cult classic The Rocky Horror Show by Richard O’Brian. |

Dance students at Burton College are set to embark on a tour of secondary schools in Staffordshire and Derbyshire, designed to raise awareness and open discussion of the key issues affecting youth culture today. A leading British documentary photographer and photo-journalist has visited Burton College to talk to photography students about his work and career to date. Martin Parr, who has enjoyed a successful career for over 35 years, developing
an international reputation for his innovative imagery, slanted approach
to social documentary and his input to photographic culture both in the
UK and abroad, spoke to the group about his distinctive style and approach
to work. |

Hairdressing apprentices and students at Burton
College have attended an expert hair colouring master-class to help hone
their skills in preparation for the heats of WorldSkills UK later this
year; a portfolio of skills competitions designed by leading industry
experts to help raise the standards of training and performance at work
whilst encouraging young people across the country to excel in their skill
area.

| STUDENTS RAISE MONEY TO TAKE PUPILS ON ACTIVITY DAY | ||
Sports students at Burton College have completed a fund-raising effort to enable them to provide more than twenty local school pupils with an activity day at a Development and Conference Centre based in the Peak National Park. The group of eleven National Diploma in Sports students, who took part in a 150 mile bicycle ride and spent a day packing bags in Morrisons to raise £600, will accompany 24 pupils, between the ages of 11 and 15, from The Pingle School to Lea Green on 16 April, where they will be given the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of outdoor activities including orienteering, climbing and a high ropes course. |
