In partnership with Burton Amateur Boxing Club and East Staffordshire Borough Council, Burton College is set to launch a new Boxing Academy, which will provide 16-19 year olds with a Sports qualification and the opportunity to develop their boxing skills.
The Academy, which will be the only one of its kind throughout Staffordshire and Derbyshire, is designed to offer young people, who are interested in a career in boxing, high quality, professional coaching and training facilities together with the chance to gain sports related qualifications.
Heading up the coaching will be Ritchie Joyce and Trevor Marler, whilst educational training will be delivered by the College at Shobnall Sports Hall. The partnership will operate in a similar way to the highly successful Football Development Academy currently run in conjunction with Burton Albion Football Club, and Golf Academy, which is run with Branston Golf & Country Club.
Commenting on the new Boxing Academy, Further Education Sports Co-ordinatorAngelo Nel said, “The new Academy is a fantastic opportunity for young people in the area and has been launched to support promising young boxers who are keen to explore a career in boxing whilst working towards a nationally recognised sports qualification. Boxing is often perceived as a violent sport, but there are many positive aspects to it, which can be useful in other areas of life. It teaches the fundamental values of discipline and respect, is a great way to keep fit and promotes good citizenship. In addition, issues of diet and anti-social behaviour can all be effectively addressed in the gym. The young people who join us in this exciting venture will be able to combine the benefits of a formal education with professional boxing coaching, with access to both high quality coaching, to enhance their physical and technical abilities, and high quality teaching to enable them to achieve a qualification, which is respected throughout the sports and leisure industries.”
A club designed to celebrate long service has held its annual luncheon at Burton College. With 28 members, the 25+ Club, which was launched last year, is dedicated to those members of staff who have served 25 years or more of continuous service.
Held in the College’s Mulberry Restaurant, the lunch, which was attended by the members together with their husbands, wives and partners, was held to welcome the three newest members to join. In addition ex College Principal (1984-1996) Peter Fearns attended the event.
Amongst the guests were the latest members to be welcomed into the Club including John Taylor and Gill Shelby, who started working at the Lichfield Street campus in 1985. Course Leader in Foundation Learning and Skills For Work Gill, began her career as a care assistant, supporting students with severe learning difficulties then took qualifications to become a lecturer, finally progressing further to become a Course Leader. In her spare time Gill enjoys gardening, cooking and spending time with her family. After working in small country hotels for 15 years, John decided to become a lecturer in Catering and Hospitalities at the College. Now working part-time, John has discovered his green fingers and also has more time to spend with his six, soon to become seven grandchildren.
Talking about the 25+ Club, College Principal & Chief Executive Dawn Ward OBE said, “I am really pleased that the 25+ Club is gaining further momentum and it’s great that we celebrate dedicated service through this event. Such clubs recognise other things too. These employees have shown an ongoing ability to change and adapt and keep up to date with the continuous development of their respective sectors so that this knowledge can be passed on to learners. Further Education is no different and is also continuously changing. Like the 25+ club, we all must work with this change to ensure that Burton College is suitably positioned to be a vibrant and outstanding organisation providing excellence for all of our communities.”
